How Biodiversity Underpins Economic Prosperity

Biodiversity is declining faster than at any time in human history with one million animal and plant species at risk of extinction within decades.

Grounded in ecology and the earth sciences, the Dasgupta Review – an independent review commissioned by HM Treasury published in February – interprets biodiversity loss as an asset management problem, which puts our economies and livelihoods at risk.

Calling for urgent, transformative change in how we act and measure economic success, it offers a new framework for understanding the sustainability of our engagement with nature and the place of nature in economics.

Join Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta, the Review’s author, to hear how economic and financial actors can improve their decision-making processes to enhance the state of nature, and our prosperity at the same time.

  • What changes should be made by the multilateral development banks?
  • What changes does this Review potentially mean for large portfolio investors and asset managers?
  • How confident should we be in the measurements used to assess biodiversity? Where is the data that can be relied upon to measure it?
  • What are the limits to a market-based approach to biodiversity?

You can find various versions of the Review to read yourself here:
