The world is having an AI moment. With the attention attracted by AI models like ChatGPT and GPT-4, interest in AI is growing exponentially in both the public and commercial sectors. As the scale of AI deployment expands, there are increasingly urgent legal questions around legal status, rights and obligations of AI developers, service providers and users, and even of AI agents themselves. Can an AI have legal personality or be the inventor of a patent? What restrictions should there be on deployment of advanced AI? The participants in this webinar are experts on AI, and will discuss questions like these about the scope, approach, history and future of legal issues for AI.


Maury Shenk's experience focuses at the intersection of technology, law and education. He is co-founder and CEO of edtech start-up LearnerShape, director and general counsel of global testing and certification company PeopleCert, and founder and managing director of Lily Innovation, through which he handles a portfolio of other investment and advisory activities. Maury is a dual-qualified US/UK lawyer and former managing partner of the London office of global law firm Steptoe & Johnson, where he remains an advisor. He has a deep practical understanding of technology, especially artificial intelligence, edtech, IT, telecommunications and information security. Maury is a graduate of Harvard College and Stanford Law School. He is a lover of languages – a native speaker of English (the American version), proficient in French and Russian, comfortable in Mandarin Chinese and Spanish, and dilettante in German, Greek, Italian and Norwegian and Greek. He is also a guitar player and an avid competitive and recreational sailor.


Robert (“Bob”) McDowall spent his career in banking and finance in the City of London, working for a number of institutions including Merrill Lynch, Pru-Bache and Singer and Friedlander, and retains a number of consultancies and directorships in the finance and technology sectors.

He has authored, co-authored and presented a number of research papers on finance and technology.

Robert is a former President of the Folklore Society, an Academic Charity. He has delivered a number of papers, lectures and blogs on many facets of folklore from literature and food and drink to finance, money, urban myths and legends. He currently serves on the Finance Committee of the Royal Anthropological Institute and is a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute and chairs its fund raising committee.

He lives in the Channel Islands. He is a former member of the States of Alderney (2013-2016) where he chaired the Policy and Finance Committee and the Finance sub-committee. He currently chairs Conservatives Abroad in the Channel Islands and sits on the Board of Conservatives Abroad.

Robert is a Livery Man and former Member of the Court of the Livery Company, The Tin Plate alias Wireworkers Company, a Member of the Gresham Society. He has a degree in law (LL.B) from University College London and is a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute (“FRAI”).
