Accelerating Progress: The Importance Of Finance In Scaling Up Net Zero Steel & Concrete Production To Meet Growing Corporate Demand

Background: Concrete production and steelmaking currently account for a staggering 8% and 11% of global annual carbon emissions, respectively. Having been overlooked for far too long, attention on how to swiftly and equitably decarbonise both sectors is growing.

There are enabling technologies to clean up production. Demand from businesses for net zero steel and concrete grows ever louder. Yet, volumes are not coming to market at the speed or scale we need. We’re at a critical juncture where decisions on purchasing, investment and policy must be laser focused on driving decarbonisation.

In this session, Climate Group will present their global ConcreteZero and SteelZero initiatives, which are bringing together leading businesses to signal their demand for net zero steel and concrete by 2050 or earlier, and will highlight the critical role of finance in diverting capital flows toward clean steel and concrete production.

Speaker:

Jen Carson is Head of Industry at Climate Group leading the programme strategy and growth of our SteelZero and ConcreteZero initiatives. Jen brings her decade long experience of working in the sustainability sector to accelerating the decarbonisation of heavy industries.

She joined the Climate Group in 2021 as Senior Manager for Industry, following her role as Associate at Delta-EE where she was based in Australia and led research on the country’s energy market. Prior to this, Jen held a variety of roles at Delta-EE, where she created the organisation’s first cross-technology research service and provided in depth market analysis on a range of areas.

Jen started her career in a variety of consultancy and analysis roles at The Carbon Trust, Dunelm Energy and Kier Group. She holds a Masters in Carbon Management and a BSc in Geography from The University of Edinburgh, and is a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) and Member of the Energy Institute (MEI).
