‘Money’ comes from the Latin word Moneta, and the Romans also gave us many other monetary terms, like £sd. But their understanding of money seems very limited by modern standards. There was some awareness of the quantity theory of money and of the importance of liquidity. It’s also been thought that they made attempts to regulate the balance of gold and silver in their bimetallic system. But what did they think about other things, like monetary union or dealing with inflation?

Andrew Burnett was Deputy Director of the British Museum from 2002 to 2013, having begun his career at the Museum in 1974 in the Coins and Medals department as Research Assistant.

His publications include Coinage in the Roman World and several volumes in the series Roman Provincial Coinage. He is a Trustee of the Royal Mint Museum and the American Numismatic Society and has been President of the Royal Numismatic Society, the Roman Society and the International Numismatic Commission.
