Employee Ownership And The Future Of Capitalism

Employee ownership works. Companies perform better and employees end up with substantially more wealth. But employee ownership is still the exception. Share plans in the UK aim to replicate US Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs), but, unlike in the U.S. model, employee ownership trusts in the UK are not set up so that employees typically benefit from the growth in share value in their accounts over time. The U.S. model encourages focus on long-term growth; the UK model focuses on short-term dividend payouts. This webinar will look into what can be done to move employee ownership forward, what lessons can be learned from US ESOPs, and what companies can do to make their own employee ownership plans more effective.


Corey Rosen is the founder of the National Center for Employee Ownership, a private, nonprofit membership, information, and research organization in Oakland, CA. The NCEO is widely considered to be the authoritative source on broad-based employee ownership plans. He cofounded the NCEO in 1981 after working five years as a professional staff member in the U.S. Senate, where he helped draft legislation on employee ownership plans. Prior to that, he taught political science at Ripon College. He is the author or co-author of over 100 articles and numerous books on employee ownership, and co-author (with John Case and Martin Staubus) of Equity: Why Employee Ownership is Good for Business (Harvard Business School Press, 2005). He has appeared frequently on CNN, PBS, NPR, MSNBC, and other network programs; and is regularly quoted in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, BusinessWeek, and other leading publications. He has lectured on employee ownership on six continents.

Malcolm Hurlston CBE is the epitome of a social entrepreneur and Life President of the Employee Share Ownership Centre, Esop Centre. He conceived the trades union bank Unity in 1980, and founded the Registry Trust in 1985, the Employee Share Ownership Centre in 1987, and the charitable Foundation for Credit Counselling in 1992. Malcolm designed the Employee Share Ownership Centre to bring leveraged employee share ownership to Europe. Educated at Cambridge, he trained as a Russian interrogator during national service. He then worked as a journalist, television trainer and lobbyist. He is visiting professor at the University of Westminster. He is also President of the Foundation for Credit Counselling (now t/a StepChange) which he founded in 1992. His work in financial services was recognised in the Queen’s New Year Honours List 2013 when he was awarded a CBE.
