Achieving Sustainability In Developing Markets: A Case Study With Serious Shea & Cleo Organics
Webinar - Argentina & Russia

Webinar Recording

We need to work out how sustainable products and services can cost less than unsustainable products and services and make it happen. Delivering sustainable products and services is difficult enough in the developed world, try emerging economies compounded with current value chain and supply chain challenges. Worldwide African shea butter derived fats are used extensively in food and confectionery and in at least 1950 cosmetic products. Now 10 years into a 20 year strategy, Serious Shea and Cleo Organics is one of the examples of practical action from grass roots in Burkina Faso that aims to scale up globally. Cleo Organics delivers 100% pure, organic, vegan, zero carbon, deforestation free shea and includes African women's groups as shareholders.

Speakers:

Dr Sarah Jones started her career as a marine biogeochemist and experimental biologist for the Uk’s National Environmental Research Council (NERC). She went on to be the face of campaigns for WWF in Europe and internationally, pioneering multi-disciplinary partnerships and delivering multi-million dollar projects for bridging economic and ESG gaps in policy, business and industry, for nature conservation and for investment. Sarah has served on boards for WWF and most recently for a global investment fund managed by Cognis Capital. When asked where she comes from Sarah replies that she was born in The World and her families include those of 300 ex-shanty town children from the outskirts of Buenos Aires City. In 2012 Sarah co-founded the (now) Clarity Coalition: Bridging the Gaps Between Investment and Global Resource Trends.

William Kwende is a leading sustainable business entrepreneur. Born in Burkina Faso, he is a descendant of the royal family of the capital of (now) Benin and works seamlessly at all levels in the most challenging circumstances. William spent over 10 years working for the UN Organisation on Migration before founding Agritech in 2005. Since its beginnings Agritech has focused on achieving ESG sustainability for the water-energy-food nexus, including by developing and training clusters of farmers in the West African Sahel though to global trading. Agritech's first joint venture with the Temasek subsidiary JOIL generated the investment for Agritech subsidiary Golden Organics to pump-prime the public-private partnerships of the Serious Shea production company. William created Burkina Golden Oils in 2010 focused on empowering rural women and is now leading Africa’s Consortium for Clean Food Processing Infrastructure.
