Anyone who knows about innovation and banking will be aware that Turkey, as a country, leads the pack. Garanti, Akbank, Yapi Kredi, Isbank, Denizbank and more are all great examples of leading the change in retail banking. By way of example, Turkish banks made a big push into contactless over a decade ago; they were the first to launch Facebook banking services at the start of this decade; and mobile payments has been available for years. At the heart of all of these services is their ACH, Bankalararasi Kart Merkezi (BKM). To learn more about the landscape of Turkish banking innovation, the Financial Services Club is delighted to host the CEO of BKM, Soner Canko.
Soner has been CEO of BKM since 2007, and was previously Board Member and Chairman from 2003 through 2007.
Soner Canko’s career started at Disbank, then he took up managerial roles in Citibank, Alternatif Bank and Bank Kapital. Dr. Canko continued his career as Business Development Manager in HP Consultancy; CEO in Bilesim Payment Systems; Founder and CEO of First Data Turkey; and lastly Executive Vice President of Ziraat Bankasi.
Dr. Soner Canko graduated from Istanbul University’s Faculty of Political Science, and also received a Master’s degree and PhD from Istanbul University, Faculty of Economics.
