Barclays has recently launched the Barclays Accelerator, powered by Techstars. Techstars has been around for a while, and have a clear value proposition to mentor startup funds with mentoring, knowledge and funding. The London partnership with Barclays provides even more, with the startups receiving valuable mentoring from Barclays executives on how to navigate the extremely complex regulatory environment fintech operates in. The ability to trial their products with Barclays, and become a potential supplier or partner is also a huge credibility boost for a very small firm.
The ten firms were selected from over 400 applicants and will air their offerings on 25th September at an investor’s demonstration day. The firms are selected as being those that are “passionate about digital and have some radical FinTech (financial technology for those unfamiliar) concepts that you believe could instigate a new era in financial services innovation.”
The firms selected are provided with a space to base themselves in London’s East End, provided by Barclays, whilst Techstars mentor the new firms. Barclays say they are doing this to purely observe the process.
Having said that, if the startups incorporate Barclays’ Pingit APIs in their offerings, they wouldn’t complain. The space itself also allows Barclays to have a front row seat to the innovation happening in fintech, and there is perhaps no hotter topic at the moment than Cryptocurrencies..
To find out what the latest state of play is in this space, Barclays has kindly provided the Financial Services Club with access to their facility once a quarter. This first evening dialogue will focus on the latest trends in cryptocurrencies and will be led by Simon Taylor, VP Entrepreneurial Partnerships at Barclays, and Richard. G. Brown, Executive Architect, Banking and Financial Markets, IBM.
Simon Taylor is VP Entrepreneurial Partnerships at Barclays. Simon started as a software engineer in the telco sector in the late 90s and has a unique grasp of the tech disruption impacting FIs. Through a 15 year career he navigated from Telco, into startups and then into Fin Tech with TSYS a top 10 Global Payments Processor where he was responsible for building out the Mobile Products team.
