Customer focus in banking: where is it?
During the past decade, customers might well feel that banks don’t care about them. PPI mis-selling amounting to billions in fines, followed by FX and LIBOR rate rigging, swaps mis-selling, corporate greed appearing at all levels in the form of excessive bonuses and generally bad behaviour, does not smack of an industry doing its best to put the customer first. Then, on the other hand, we hear about helpful banking and being a trusted advisor. What is the truth? Are banks becoming customer focused once more or does the customer come last? To find out, the Financial Services Club has arranged a dinner with three different points of view that should prove a formidable discussion:
- Owen Woodley, Managing Director, Lloyds Bank Retail;
- Anthony Thomson, co-Founder Atom Bank and Metro Bank; and
- Derek French, Director of the Campaign for Community Banking Services.
Owen Woodley is Managing Director, Lloyds Bank Retail for Lloyds Banking Group, and was previously CEO of Shawbrook Bank; Partnerships Director, Barclaycard; and Regional Director, Barclays and Woolwich.
Anthony Thomson had a successful career in financial marketing before founding Metro Bank with Vernon Hill. Five years later, he has turned his attention to launching the UK’s first digital bank, Atom Bank, with partner Mark Mullen, former CEO of First Direct.
Derek French founded the Campaign for Community Banking Services after a 38 year career with NatWest. The Campaign lobbies banks and government to slow the rate of closures and adopt alternatives to closure, principally shared branches.
