Background: In this presentation, Darren Smith discusses how effective communication and networking skills can increase employee participation in share plans. The presenter shares personal experiences and tips on networking effectively without trying to sell, acting as a host, making warm introductions, and being authentic. The presentation highlights the importance of growing internal networks across functions like legal, HR, and communications to support successful share plan launches and drive uptake. It emphasises having engaging stories ready to share. The presentation was debated by the panel on "Anticipating Issues In Executive Rewards, Investor Guidance, And Communications", at the Esop Centre’s 2024 Share Plans Symposium on 25 April.

Darren Smith joined the Global Shares team in July 2021. He had worked with YBS Share Plans for more than 20 years as share plans consultant, client relationship manager and most recently as national sales manager, until it announced that it was pulling out of share scheme administration. Darren is a well-known and regular industry host, speaking on topics including share plans and financial wellbeing, bringing fun and an engaging style to events.
