GFCI – Come Fly With Me

Our work for the City of London Corporation - the Global Financial Centres Index 1 - is freely available and creating a stir.  The GFCI has featured in the Financial Times, the New York Times and other publications from Shanghai to Mumbai and many major cities.

Mark Yeandle and Michael Mainelli have been presenting the results to numerous audiences and the Lord Mayor of London has even appeared on television to discuss it.

Michael’s family have been teasing him mercilessly for his appearance on CNBC’s "Money Honey" (Maria Bartiromo) programme "Closing Bell"; indeed Michael detects a whiff of jealousy that Maria gave him five minutes airtime.  What those envious people don’t know is that CNBC used a remote feed rather than fly Michael to the studio.  Less “come fly with me” – more “Maria, I’ve just had a video conference with a girl named Maria….” At least Z/Yen’s climate change credentials are enhanced, if not Michael’s ego.

Seriously, though, the entire Z/Yen community is encouraged wholeheartedly to join in on GFCI 2.

The London Accord - A Little Mess Is Necessary

And speaking of climate change, the London Accord launch conference at Reuters in the Docklands went well.  10 research houses and numerous experts set out their research programmes for the year, with Jan-Peter Onstwedder leading the conference and Tessa Marwick organising everything.

The Z/Yen team prepared many of the materials.  For example, Mark Yeandle, Liz Bailey and Linda Cook, with Mike Young of Corda, administered the WarmGame, which was very well-received.  Michael prepared his talk by going off to Cambridge beforehand to be trained by Al Gore.

At the event, many technological and economic issues were thoroughly debated.  We were honoured to have Michael Snyder from the City of London Corporation and Chris Huhne MP, shadow environment minister for the Liberal Democrats, encouraged the participants.  Chris made some interesting points after dinner that we need to accept the idea of "messy" solutions.

Now the hard work begins of research and publication for the end of the year, i.e. Liz Bailey now researches with her new wind turbine and the Mainelli children with their new H2 hydrogen car (toys? certainly not).

Z/Yen Awarded Payroll Giving Awards Contract

Z/Yen will be continuing to work with the Institute of Fundraising on Payroll Giving initiatives.  While the Payroll Giving Grants campaign has ended, the Payroll Giving Centre is alive and well.  Following the successful launch of Payroll Giving Awards last year, an expanded format is all set to become an annual event.

Z/Yen will continue to run the Payroll Giving Centre and Awards, mainly through the good offices of Linda Cook and Ian Harris.  Liz Bailey and Sonia Raymond are also involved in the initiatives.  The team is just concluding a substantial piece of research into portability of Payroll Giving.

Z/Yen’s work to date on Payroll Giving has been highly praised; the unsung heroine being Helen Davies who did much of the work on the Payroll Giving Grants campaign and timed her maternity leave to perfection, making the handover smooth and painless.

UKCAE - Above The Bar

Z/Yen supports an exciting new initiative, the United Kingdom Council for Access and Equality (UKCAE).  UKCAE was formed in 2006 to give businesses clarity about the Disability Discrimination Act.  The UKCAE 3-Step Pathway helps employers develop the skills and knowledge to help prevent discrimination and build an inclusive workplace.

UKCAE is working with UKAS to have the Pathway and associated standards recognised; this will give the Pathway a national standing and ensure accordance with existing conventions on standards and verification.  Businesses that undertake the Pathway will be able to demonstrate to staff, customers and suppliers that they have embraced their responsibility to provide workplaces and cultures that are truly inclusive.

Z/Yen’s role has been mentoring some of the UKCAE team based on our extensive work with other social and ethical bodies.

Further growth to the Z/Yen Toddler Team

We’re delighted to announce that Helen Davies, ably assisted by her husband John, has given birth to a baby boy, Tobias.  With all these recent Z/Yen births, Ian Harris is rubbing his hands with glee in anticipation of a really strong cricket team, in 18 to 20 years time.  More importantly, Helen, John and Tobias are all reportedly doing very well.
